NEW YORK – The United Nations has allocated an additional $5 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to aid Pakistan’s response to the country’s ongoing, devastating floods. The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, approved the allocation, a UN spokesperson announced.
State-owned news agency reported that this new funding supplements the $600,000 OCHA’s Asia and the Pacific Regional Fund designated, as well as the $250,000 the Pakistan Country-Based Pooled Fund sanctioned for local NGOs.
“The funds will support cash transfers, health, water and sanitation, shelter, and food, among other urgent needs,” UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters at a press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York. He also called for more funds to address the situation.
Dujarric added that UN humanitarian colleagues are collaborating closely with the government to provide relief to flood survivors. Citing UN reports, he noted that many villages remain submerged, with some water depths reaching 10 meters, which has delayed humanitarian access and assessment efforts.

He identified priority needs as sanitation, hygiene, health, shelter, food, and water. “Our partners working in health have expressed concerns over a rise in waterborne diseases in many parts,” Dujarric said. “We are working to support the government-led response, and OCHA has deployed staff to the affected area in Punjab to assist with coordination efforts.”
“While these new funds will enable lifesaving aid, existing resources are nearly exhausted, and urgent additional funding is critically needed,” Dujarric concluded.
