ISLAMABAD : The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) Tuesday confirmed Additional Judge Justice Tariq Mahmood Bajwa as a permanent judge of the Lahore High Court whereas recommended appointment of 13 additional judges across two high courts.
A press statement of the top court disclosed the Commission met on July 21 under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Pakistan at the Supreme Court’s Conference Room in Islamabad, sitting from 1:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in three separate compositions- one under Article 175A (2) of the Constitution, one for matters concerning the Lahore High Court, and one for the High Court of Balochistan.
For the Lahore High Court, the Commission, by a majority of its total membership, recommended 10 nominees as additional judges: Amir Ajam Malik, Asad Ali Bajwa, Barrister Muhammad Usman Ghani Rashid Cheema, Ghulam Sarwar Nihang, Khalid Ibn-i-Aziz, Muhammad Ajmal Khan Zahid, Muhammad Amjad Pervaiz, Munawar Iqbal Duggal, Shiren Imran, and Syed Farhad Ali – all advocates of the Supreme Court.
For the High Court of Balochistan, the agenda listed the appointment of five additional judges, but the Commission ultimately recommended only three nominees – Allah Dad Roshan and Abdul Qayyum Lehri, both District and Sessions Judges, and Muhammad Rauf Atta, an advocate of the Supreme Court — leaving two vacancies unfilled.
Separately, under its composition dealing with Article 175A (2) matters, the Commission took up proposed amendments to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (Appointment of Judges) Rules, 2024. It decided to circulate the proposals among the remaining members of the Commission, including representatives of the Federal Shariat Court and the High Courts, for their consideration and approval.
