Celebrated Super-over! England win first-ever Cricket World Cup after astonishing six-ball shootout when match was TIED on 241 runs each – sending fans delirious at Lord’s.
England are World Champions after winning the final at Lord’s in the most dramatic fashion in history. The hosts tied with New Zealand, a century partnership from Stokes and Butler rescuing a shaky start. The pair hit 15 runs off England’s super over but New Zealand made the same score from their six deliveries
Under the Laws the win was therefore awarded to England who hit eight more boundaries during the match. It is England’s first World Cup victory having reached three semi-finals in the history of the One Day event.
England scored 14 in the last over but Mark Wood was run out seeking the second run that would have won it for the hosts. Ben Stokes, who finished on 84 not out, came back for the Super Over with Jos Buttler amid scenes never before seen at the home of cricket.
