While addressing complaints regarding recently taken out of syllabus LAW-GAT exams the Pakistan Bar Council stated on Tuesday that all the candidates should not suffer from faulty questions as their papers would be remarked.
Three years ago on March 6, 2018, top court had issued directives to the PBC to restore Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) through the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Objective of the Assessment Test is to ensure proper scrutiny and evaluation of a law graduate desirous to join the legal profession so that only competent individuals possessing necessary basic knowledge of law may enter the legal profession for practicing law. Since 2018 the HEC regularly conducted the exam in 14 major cities of Pakistan. However, law graduates who appeared in the recently conducted LAW-GAT on May 30,2021 have raised their concerns saying the paper was out of syllabus.
In view of serious complaints regarding out of syllabus and faulty questions put in the LAW-GAT conducted on May 30, 2021, Muhammad Faheem Wali, Chairman, Executive Committee and Azam Nazeer Tarar, Chairman, Legal Education Committee of the PBC conducted successive meetings with officials of Higher Education Commission. Issuing a press statement on Tuesday, the PBC said, “As a result of thorough scrutiny it was found that out of one hundred questions ten questions fell in the above category. It has been decided that papers would be re-marked in line with above decision and across the board marking would be carried out giving advantage of out of syllabus and faulty questions”.
It added, “The Law-Gat result for May 30, 2021 examination is being announced as per above decision. The said exercise has been carried out while taking on board representatives of Provincial/Islamabad Bar Councils and in particular Legal Education Committees/Special Committees of all Bar Councils”.
Meanwhile, on June 14, Capital lawyers’ representative council Islamabad Bar Council Tuesday formed a two-member committee of the members including Qazi Adil Aziz and Syed Qamar Hussain Sabzwari to consider the feasibility of grant of additional marks, compensatory marks to the candidates who took the LAW-GAT test of HEC on September 13,2020. “The committee will look into the LAW-GAT test so as to examine objection raised by the candidates with regard to incorrect options provided in the test and in some cases more than one correct options for answering the MCQs questions and explore the possibility of grant of compensatory marks to the candidates.
