Lahore, The Supreme Court has ordered Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to issue notification of success of newly elected Senators having dual nationality.
A three-member bench of apex court headed by Chief Justice (CJ) has conducted the hearing of the petition and formed a larger bench to review the constitutional points regarding dual nationality.
During the course of the hearing, newly elected Senator of PTI Chaudhry Sarwar told the court that he has left the British nationality. On this, the CJ inquired Chaudhry Sarwar that will not you restore the nationality after completing political tenure? The CJ asked him to submit affidavit that you will not restore the nationality.
Chaudhry Sarwar said that in the past people came in Pakistan and enjoy the premiership and went back while I have been doing the welfare of the people for the last four decades.
The CJ inquired Chaudhry Sarwar to submit details of his property, on this he said my wife and children have dual nationality and property is owned by my family adding that I am leaving the nationality on permanent basis not temporarily.
“The court verdict against me would be matter of immense pleasure for Overseas Pakistanis and those who transact foreign exchange in Pakistan would leave negative impression”, he added.
On this, Justice Ejaz-ul-Hassan, member of bench said that you need not worry about Overseas Pakistanis, court is here for them.
The Attorney General informed the court that under British law nationality can be restored.
On this occasion, newly elected Senators of ruling PML-N Nuzhat Sadiq and Saadia Abbasi were also present. After the court verdict, they felicitated each other.
