As many as 17 members new Council of the country’s apex regulator of qualifications in medicine and dentistry is likely to be constituted to run the affairs of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC) through an Ordinance 2019 on Saturday.
Reliable sources disclosed to TLTP that Federal Law Ministry has wetted the proposed draft of the upcoming Ordinance for seeking assent of the President of Pakistan on the eve of Friday.
The Ordinance is being promulgated to provide regulations and control of the medical profession and to establish the minimum standard of basic medical education and training and recognition of qualifications in medicine and dentistry.
It is worth mentioning that a year before on January 12, Supreme Court had formed an ad hoc council under the chair of a retired judge former judge of the apex court, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan to run the affairs of PM&DC.
According to the Ordinance, the Council shall be comprised of 17 members to be notified by the Prime Minister including three members of civil society, who shall be nominated by the Prime Minister among the nationally recognized, philanthropist, professionals or persons of known repute.
Four members from clinical faculty of public medical college or university at least at the rank of professor with ten years of experience as clinical, practitioners and teacher of outstanding merit shall be nominated by each provincial government.
Four members from basic science faculty of a public medical college or university at least at the rank of associate professor with ten years of experience as a teacher of outstanding merit shall be nominated by each provincial government.
Prime Minister shall select two members of the clinical faculty from private medical colleges whereas two members being the member of the clinical faculty of the public, dental college, or medical and dental university from Punjab and KP and from Sindh and Baluchistan on rotation basis would be nominated by the provincial government. Members nominated from the medical and dental colleges must be at least at the rank of associate professor with 10 years experience as a clinical dental practitioner and teacher of outstanding merit.
One member shall be a nominee of the President of the College of Physicians and Surgeon Pakistan. One member shall be a nominee of the Surgeon General of Armed Forces Medical Service.
