Speaking at the weekly press briefing on Thursday foreign office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal informed Pakistan has principally decided to grant consular access to Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav in pursuance of recently announced verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Pakistani military court had awarded capital punishment to Kulbhushan Jadhav under charges of espionage and terrorism in the country. Consequently, India invoked jurisdiction of the ICJ which finally stayed the punishment while asking Pakistan to grant counsel access to Jadhav in the matter for legal remedies.
Responding to a question about update on the Commander Kulbushan Jhadav case on Thursday, Dr Faisal told Islamabad has offered the Indian High Commission to avail consular access on this Friday (August 02) saying, “the reply from the Indian side is awaited”.
Meanwhile, according to an Indian newspaper, addressing a press conference, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, “We have received a proposal from Pakistan. We are evaluating the proposal in the light of ICJ judgement. We will maintain communication with Pakistan in this matter through diplomatic channels.”
“We cannot discuss the modalities. We will assess and evaluate the conditions laid down meeting in mind the ICJ ruling and then respond accordingly. Whatever response is to be sent will be given by us timely through diplomatic channels,” Raveesh Kumar said.
