Chief Justice tells ICT Law Officers government litigation must be conducted with professionalism, objectivity and in line with constitutional principles

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi underscored the important role of Law Officers as officers of the Court, observing the State effective legal representation contributes significantly to the fair, efficient, and timely administration of justice.

The Chief Justice also emphasized that government departments must conduct litigation with professionalism and objectivity, in accordance with constitutional and legal principles.

He expressed while addressing a delegation of Law Officers of the Islamabad Capital Territory, led by the Advocate General, ICT, who called on him at the Supreme Court of Pakistan on July 8, 2026. The meeting brought together senior legal representatives of the State and the country’s top judge for a wide-ranging discussion on matters concerning the administration of justice.

During the meeting, discussions centred on the effective conduct of government litigation and the institutional coordination between the judiciary and the Law Officers. Both sides deliberated on the mechanisms through which this coordination could be further strengthened to ensure that the State’s legal representation aligns with the broader goals of judicial efficiency and public trust.

The participants also exchanged views on measures aimed at improving the quality of public litigation, reducing avoidable litigation, and facilitating the expeditious disposal of cases. These issues have remained a longstanding concern within Pakistan’s justice sector, given the significant volume of cases involving government departments and agencies pending before courts across the country.

The delegation, for its part, appreciated the opportunity for constructive engagement with the Chief Justice and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting measures aimed at strengthening the administration of justice. The Law Officers noted the value of such direct interaction with the judiciary in fostering a shared understanding of institutional priorities.

The Chief Justice, in turn, assured the delegation of the judiciary’s full institutional support in promoting continued professional collaboration and effective coordination on matters relating to public litigation. He reiterated that a cooperative relationship between the courts and the State’s legal representatives was essential to the smooth functioning of the justice system.

The meeting concluded with an interactive exchange of views on matters of mutual interest, reaffirming the shared commitment to upholding the rule of law, strengthening institutional coordination, and promoting an efficient, responsive, and citizen-centric justice system.
