Former KP police chief Nasir Durrani loses life battle against Covid-19

Nasir Khan Durrani, former inspector general of police (IGP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa died of Covid-19 on Monday. Durrani had been under treatment at Lahore’s Mayo Hospital since he contracted the deadly disease. He had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) and on a ventilator.

Nasir Khan Durrani also served as Chairman Punjab Police Reforms Commission during the initial few months of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government. Durrani had tendered his resignation from the post within weeks in 2018 citing health issues.

Reportedly, the commission had become defunct when Durrani decided to quit as chairman of the commission. He quit the slot in protest against the premature transfer of the then IGP Punjab Muhammad Tahir.

Durrani had served for almost three and a half years in the province. He introduced strict accountability and dismissed around 800 policemen amid awarding another kind of punishment to over 6000 others.

Durrani set up the police assistance lines in all districts of the province. He established police access service, six specialized schools, formed a special combat unit of specialized commandoes on the pattern of Special Services Group of the army. He also reformed the Counter-Terrorism Department and introduced technology-based investigations like geo-tagging and others.

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar has expressed a deep sense of sorrow over the death of Nasir Khan Durrani and extended sympathies to the bereaved heirs.

Punjab chief minister paid tribute to the services of late Durrani. He also prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.
