IHC exempts Maryam, Safdar in Avenfield reference case till Sep 15

Accepting the plea for exemption from appearance before the court in appeals against conviction in Avenfield reference, Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted seven weeks to PML-N’s Vice President Maryam Nawaz and her husband who were unable to appear before the court on Thursday.

An Accountability Court had awarded imprisonment sentence to Maryam Nawaz and her husband Capt. (reted) Muhammad Safdar, however, they had challenged their conviction before the IHC.

On Thursday, a division bench comprising Justices Aamer Farooq and Mohsin Akhter Kayani adjourned the hearing in the matter till September 15. Appearing before the bench, counsels for the appellants requested the court to grant one-time exemption from appearance . They contended that Maryam Nawaz’s lawyer was unable to attend the hearing of this day. After a brief hearing of the matter, the bench adjourned hearing till September 15. It is pertinent to mention that counsels for appellants have questioned the conviction in the matter on the grounds that there is no sufficient material available against their clients.
