ISLAMABAD, (TLTP): Terming arrest of owner of Jang group illegal on Monday, vice chairman of top regulatory body of the lawyers Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), Abid Saqi has demanded immediate release of Mir Shakeelur Rehman saying he is innocent unless proven guilty.

While condemning arrest of Mir Shakeelur Rehman in 34 four years old case under charges to acquire a total of 54 Kanal land illegally at Lahore , vice chairman PBC Abid Saqi denounced the arrest against all legal and ethical norms.

Saqi claimed , “The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) which is often accused of resorting to pressure tactics by falsely implicating mostly those, in the political and media arena, who criticize the Government policies, has set another example of victimization”.

He said that the arrest of Mir Shakeelur Rehman at the hands of NAB authorities without any solid proof and requisite inquiry, as per the law, is an ample proof of victimization of political and media personnel, for their criticism against government policies, which in fact they do in exercise of their right of expression as guaranteed under the Constitution.

“In fact, the pre-trial arrest of Mir Shakeelur Rehman is the worst type of punishment which could be expected only from the government not believing in democratic process, fair play and the right of free trial. It is most unfortunate that the government is becoming intolerant against criticism, which amounts to undermine the right of expression and the free media. The vice chairman, Pakistan Bar council, has therefore, demanded for immediate release of Mir Shakeelur Rehman as he is innocent unless proven guilty”, Saqi concluded.
