IHC directs for Islamabad LG polls in 4 months

While hearing intra-court appeals regarding Local Government (LG) polls in federal capital Thursday, the Islamabad High Court directed Election Commission of Pakistan to conduct the elections within 120 days.

A two-judge bench led by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq was hearing appeals of ECP and the federation against the decision of the single member bench. The Director General ECP apprised the bench that LG polls in the capital would cost around Rs 200 millions. At this, the Chief Justice asked the ECP to conduct the elections as the government could easily provide these funds.

Preventing an increase in Union Councils (UCs), the Chief Justice observed the court would pass an order so that the number of union councils wouldn’t be increased for the upcoming elections.

Later, the bench disposed of the intra-court appeals while prohibiting federal government from increasing number of UCs again before the elections. Earlier, the ECP had failed to comply with the high court’s order of holding the LG elections in Islamabad on December 31. The electoral watchdog and the federal government filed intra-court appeals against the verdict.

The PTI, the co-petitioner in the case, also filed a contempt plea against the commission’s chief, its other officials, and interior as well as cabinet secretaries.
